A landmark emerging from a complex program to merge infrastructural city access, logistic and multi-modal platform with environmental mitigation.

program: creation of a landmark, interport development, enhancement and rehabilitation of areas neighboring site northeast and included among the highway east of Novara and the junction of the highway. Implementation of logistic centre and services (300.000 mq), intermodal hub and high speed new train station, highrise building for offices, hotel, congress centre and services. Landscape design and systems for environmental mitigation.

 

The landscape, according to the European Convention, is the result of a complex of relationships between the natural system and the anthropic system. As such it is not a static entity and, whenever it is decided to modify it in a sensitive way, it is first necessary to know in depth the complex balance on which it is based to try to reduce the impact of modifications but also to establish at what level will determine the new balance. In the case of the competition, the expected impact is very significant, but in this phase we can’t propose strategies and a working method for the eventual next phase. The first strategic choice is the overturning of priorities: to adapt the functional needs to the characteristics and sensibility of the territory. Precisely for this reason, the competition proposal was conceptualized in the form of schemes that only in the next phase, and only after collecting sufficient data, will be transformed into a design of a real urban planning and landscape project. The second aspect is in such a way that the Platform can be made recognizable and attractive through a strong identity sign that signals not only as "Porta di Novara" but as that exceptional place where two of the main transport routes of Europe meet. The third aspect on which the project proposal was concentrated is the functioning of the "interportual machine" and logistics. By adapting the function to the environment the efficiency of the "machine" must not be reduced, but improveds it in terms of energy and economy. The proposal identifies in high energy efficiency and in environmental sustainability the objectives to be achieved.
