CREATING COROMANDEL

The essence of the Coromandel House concept lies in one of Zanuso’s earliest ideas, a text published in Domus magazine in August 1942: “I will go to the edge of the city and look for a meadow ...”. Yet this would be realised, fully formed, not in Italy, but in the South African veld in 1975. It was in the context of Domus, under the direction of Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909–1969) who introduced the subtitle “The Man’s House”, that Zanuso defined his point of view on living and his ideal house. But even before that, the architectural principle that later developed in Coromandel was fixed in Zanuso’s explanatory text accompanying a conceptual project published by Domus in response to an appeal launched by the magazine.
