BUILT WITH/IN

Complexity and contraddictions in reuse

Andrea Zamboni

Today the encounter between the new and the pre-existent is configured as an inescapable condition, before which we find ourselves every time something is designed for our cities. Work on what already exists does not only consist of the conservation of artefacts; rather, it once again becomes the area of connection between architectural and urban form, extending in a dimensional key a rereading of entire parts of abandoned city areas and, at a chronological level, in the restoration of twentieth-century heritage. The field of action of regeneration and adaptive reuse is both specific and general, and succeeds in reconciling areas—architecture, urban planning, landscape, and environment—that for a long time have been divided, and, in most cases, in contrast.

Zamboni Associati focuses its research on the relationship between the new and the pre-existing. By intervening in pre-existences that, in different ways, come with “restrictions,” the firm’s work is strongly influenced by this specific field of action, directing it towards a precise design choice. The restoration of monumental complexes, the regeneration of abandoned areas, and the restoration of the Modern are three challenges that Zamboni Associati deals with in parallel. “Built With,” “Built‐In,” “Built Within” are terms that sum up the methods it uses on the various sites.
